“Branded design? It rarely goes hand in hand with ergonomics.Chair manufacturers should remember this if they want to be really innovative offering beautiful products that are also comfortable and good for health.”This is the opinion by Professor Antonio Dal Monte, considered as one of the fathers of the science of functional evaluation of athletes, who met with chair industry companies to discuss design and production issues with a focus on ergonomics. The initiative was promoted by Catas based in San Giovanni al Natisone and the Area Science Park of Trieste, both very active in the promotion of chair culture.
During the meetings, Dal Monte illustrated the computer-based tools currently available to identify the seat areas that must be modified to discharge and distribute the weight of the human body, leveraging soft as well as hard parts, like muscles and bones.
There is no single method to identify the ideal seat for a sofa or chair, a PC desk or an aircraft cabin. There are too many different elements to be taken into account, including body weight, movements and available space. This makes it necessary for chair manufacturers to design and manufacture good seats where all body parts are comfortable, so as to avoid even serious diseases to muscles, without forgetting that the way you sit also affects blood circulation.
About the ergonomic concept, Angelo Speranza, general manager of Catas, explained that “ergonomics deal with interactions among the elements of a system and the function they are designed for, in order to increase user satisfaction and system performance. The Fvg ergonomics project launched by Area Science Park and Catas aims at improving the competitiveness of industrial production through innovative solutions that can enhance the living quality of people, their safety, comfort, efficiency and effective in the workplace.”
