Wooden boxes and the “Made green in Italy”

28/07/2021

The wooden boxes are fully part of the ‘Made Green in Italy’, the voluntary national scheme on the environmental footprint of products, issued by the Ministry of Ecological Transition. They are finally awarded a ‘title’ which highlights the criteria of sustainability and Italian character of our wooden packaging“, as stated by Cosimo Messina, vice president of Assoimballaggi di FederlegnoArredo on behalf of the fruit and vegetable packaging group. “The environmental footprint is a fundamental tool for increasing the competitiveness of the Italian production system in a context in which the national and international demand for products with high environmental value is growing”.

For Assoimballaggi this is an important recognition of the many meanings that choosing a wooden box encompasses, starting with removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus contributing to the mitigation of climate change. In addition, the cultivation of trees for the production of fruit and vegetable packaging safeguards the national ecosystem by protecting the conservation of species biodiversity and counteracting the risk of ‘genetic erosion’ and reducing polluting emissions. Finally, it should not be overlooked that less energy is required to produce semi-finished wood products than to produce any other packaging material.
