During the LIGNA 2025 trade fair, HOMAG GmbH identified a suspected patent infringement by the Chinese company IMAI, which exhibited a machine featuring joining technology contested by HOMAG. The German company promptly filed a request with the Regional Court of Braunschweig, which issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting IMAI from selling, using, or importing the machine in Germany while awaiting a final ruling.
The machine in question, model Pro Edge NC680-LP-AR, uses two alternative edge-banding processes: one with pre-coated material activated by laser, and another with uncoated material, where adhesive is heated and applied directly via glue roller. This combined and automated technology lies at the heart of HOMAG’s European patent EP 2243619 B2.
Following a preliminary examination of the facts, the court recognized the credibility of HOMAG’s claim and granted the injunction, confirming the likelihood of a patent infringement and ordering IMAI to cease any related commercial activity in German territory.
Sergej Schwarz, member of the Executive Board of the HOMAG Group, welcomed the swift legal response, emphasizing the importance of protecting intellectual property to safeguard innovation and competitiveness. “Our technology is the result of years of research and investment. We will continue to defend our rights with determination,” he stated.
This case sends a strong message to the entire woodworking technology sector, underscoring the critical role of patent protection in securing the value of long-term innovation and industrial expertise.
