Hymmen relies on digital twins to optimize plant commissioning

Hymmen, a German company specializing in technological solutions for industrial production, has introduced digital twin technology to improve efficiency and reduce commissioning times for its production plants. The goal is to anticipate potential issues and optimize processes before installation at the customer’s site through full virtual simulation of the production lines. The project, developed by the automation team at Hymmen’s Bielefeld headquarters, makes it possible to verify in advance the correct operation of components, drives, and control systems, minimizing on-site adjustments and startup times.

During the final project phase, while the machinery is being delivered and assembled at the customer’s facility, Hymmen initiates virtual commissioning, creating a digital model of the actual plant. The digital twin allows 1:1-scale testing of operational logic, mechanical and electrical configurations, and process dynamics, ensuring that every element meets design specifications.

Animated simulations provide a complete visualization of the production cycle, allowing both an overall view of the plant and detailed observation of individual components. The model can be displayed on monitors, large screens, or through augmented reality (AR) glasses, offering an immersive experience in which users can virtually “enter” the machine and examine internal details even before installation.

Using digital twins brings tangible benefits, including early detection of programming errors, digital identification of mechanical interferences, continuous improvement through systematic documentation, and a significant reduction in travel and commissioning times.

All these factors contribute to more efficient project management and ensure timely delivery. The technology also facilitates process optimization by allowing the calculation of cycle times in advance and targeted improvements before the plant is delivered.
