Biomass: Xylon talk show Xylexpo

We should not be misled by the big opportunity given by the use of biomass for energy Generation, a solution to be leveraged only at the end of wood and wood-based products’ lifecycle, paying great attention to “multiple generation” (energy + heating) and to the fact that wood combustion releases carbon dioxide which wood naturally absorbs during all its lifecycle. The biomass energy industry can be a lethal competitor for the wood industry, mainly in view of fiscal deductions and incentives that make the energy use a particularly attractive alternative also for traditional suppliers of the wood supply chain.

It is vital to think about “smart” solutions, strictly connected to areas where woodworking machinery is at home and, thus, there is availability of material to be processed with effective and efficient technology allowing to look at “full cycle” woodworking processing. The main problem is supply: “virgin” wood, recyclable material, processing wastes; these are the three alternatives that can be leveraged (and integrated…).

We are starving for wood, it’s an alarm launched on a European scale, for which the awareness of competent authorities is requested (“Action Days”). Could we really be deprived of raw materials to build furniture and interior decorations? Will power and heat generation become an endless and ever-hungry consumer? And don’t forget that the more value you put into each product coming from forests, the better you can manage economic activities that create employment and attention to the territory and its conservation. Thinking together, defining priorities, looking for mutually satisfactory agreements for a raw material that finally has the attention it deserves! A talk show, a roundtable discussion involving several actors, to identify a roadmap of reflection and proposals.
