SCM, new developments in batch-one edgebanding at the Batch One Days
After the 2024 and 2025 editions, SCM is once again hosting an event dedicated to batch-one production of panels and doors. The event is part of the group’s ongoing technological innovation efforts, which recently earned SCM a nomination for the Smau Innovation Award 2026 for a project based on artificial intelligence applied to mechanical wood finishing processes.
On December 2 and 3, at its Thiene facility (Vicenza, Italy), the “Batch One Days” will provide an opportunity to present new edgebanding and double-sided sizing and edgebanding solutions developed for different manufacturing environments, with particular attention to production flexibility, automation and process integration.
The event will focus not only on the performance of individual machines and systems, but also on their ability to operate within integrated production flows and increasingly digital manufacturing environments.
SCM’s solutions are designed to meet different requirements in terms of machining quality, reliability, productivity and customization, through modular and scalable configurations that can be adapted to company size and level of automation.
This approach aims to make functions and technologies generally associated with higher-end industrial systems available to smaller companies as well, with particular attention to the balance between investment and performance.
“During the event, we will present the results of our ongoing research and development efforts, aimed at making SCM’s edgebanding solutions increasingly flexible, modular and accessible, without compromising on excellence,” says Luca Bergantini, Business Manager at SCM. “Our goal is to offer companies the best balance between investment and the value of the solution, bringing industrial-grade technologies and functions to production environments of different sizes.”
As Bergantini points out, this approach extends beyond edgebanding to SCM’s broader range of solutions for furniture and door manufacturers.
At its Thiene production facility, SCM will present four solutions designed to meet different manufacturing requirements: two cells for flexible edgebanding of straight panels, an automated line for door processing and an edgebander for softforming profiles.
New solutions for flexible edgebanding
The first solution, the “stefani cell h”, represents a further development of SCM’s technology for flexible batch-one edgebanding. Operating at a speed of approximately 30 meters per minute and achieving a productivity of up to 1,200 panels per shift, it integrates automation and material handling systems, along with new machining units. These include a corner-rounding unit designed to increase productivity and improve finishing consistency. The “Maestro active watch” supervisory software also enables coordinated management of the production process and panel flow.
The second system for straight panels, the “stefani cell e”, combines a single-sided “stefani” edgebander, configurable on either the “stefani m” or “stefani x” platform, with the new “pickback-e” handling bridge, developed to provide automated functions at a more affordable investment level.
The system automatically manages panel return and unloading, offering different stacking and stack-building options, even when handling panels of different sizes. The bridge can operate in manual or Batch One mode, with preset and automated movements. Its modular configuration allows the system to be adapted to the needs of medium-sized and smaller companies, depending on the required level of automation and process integration.
For the production of doors and partition systems, including movable walls, SCM will present an automated line integrating a “stefani sb” double-sided sizing and edgebanding machine with “mahros brush” systems for loading, panel return and unloading.
The system, measuring over 25 meters in length, is designed to handle large and heavy panels, with automated material handling operations supervised by a single operator. The line includes machining units specifically designed for door processing, as well as dedicated devices for finishing corners and profiles, including those of complex and large-sized workpieces.
Completing the range is the “stefani one” edgebander, equipped with a roller-and-belt panel return system and electronic setup, designed to process a wide range of softforming profiles, including J-shaped and 45-degree profiles, using materials such as melamine and PVC.
Automatic setup simplifies changeovers between machining operations, while a dedicated corner-rounding unit also allows the J-shaped profile to be finished along the transverse edge of the panel, extending the machine’s range of applications.
Digital control and integration
Another area of development concerns digital control and system integration. The “Maestro active watch” supervisory software enables production process monitoring, while “WinMES”, the Manufacturing Execution System developed in collaboration with Tecnest, a company of Scm Group, connects production management with company information and workflows.
Depending on the configuration adopted, these technologies can improve connectivity between different processing stages and enhance process traceability, supporting the integration of machines into the overall factory organization.
The “Batch One Days” will take place on December 2 and 3 at SCM’s Thiene facility (Vicenza, Italy).
SCM, artificial intelligence applied to wood finishing
SCM has been nominated for the 2026 Smau Innovation Award for a project introducing artificial intelligence into mechanical wood finishing processes. Developed for the “dmc” range, the solution consists of a digital configurator that uses technical data and expertise accumulated by the company to support the selection of machine configurations and processing parameters. The aim is to simplify operations, reduce training times and make specialized technical knowledge more accessible. According to SCM’s estimates, the system could reduce processing times by at least 20 percent.
