Baschild<\/strong>, the company based in Treviolo (Bergamo) specializing in wood thermal treatment and drying, took part in the 11th edition of the European Conference on Wood Modification (ECWM)<\/strong>. The event \u2013 held a few months ago in Florence \u2013 focused on the thermal treatment of wood.<\/p>\n

During the conference, Baschild<\/strong> delivered a presentation in collaboration with the University of Sassari<\/strong>, showcasing innovations and advancements in the field of thermal stabilization. The presentation was given by Alessandro Porcu<\/strong>, Baschild’s Marketing and Sales Manager, and Paola Cetera<\/strong>, a researcher from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sassari.<\/p>\n

The thermal treatment of wood is now a highly effective technique for improving resistance<\/strong> and durability<\/strong> in an environmentally sustainable<\/strong> way. The thermal treatment process \u2013 based on the use of heat and steam without chemical additives \u2013 produces a durable and stable material suitable for a variety of applications, with minimal environmental impact. As highlighted during the presentation, scientific studies, such as those by Bourgois (1989)<\/strong>, show that heat alters the molecular structure of wood, increasing dimensional stability<\/strong> and biological resistance<\/strong> without the use of chemicals.<\/p>\n

The thermal process used by Baschild<\/strong> heats the wood to temperatures as high as 200 degrees Celsius<\/strong>, alternating heating cycles with re-humidification to stabilize the material. The treated wooden boards are processed according to current standards, such as Nf B 50-105-3<\/strong>, and the company exclusively uses wood from sustainably managed forests<\/strong> certified with international environmental standards, including PEFC<\/strong> and FSC<\/strong>, to ensure the responsible sourcing of materials while respecting the delicate balance between industrial production and environmental conservation.<\/p>\n

WOOD SPECIES<\/strong>
\nAmong the species treated are western red cedar<\/strong>, larch<\/strong>, spruce<\/strong>, Nordic pine<\/strong>, and Douglas fir<\/strong>. These woods, chosen for their natural properties, become even more versatile through thermal treatment, which enhances their dimensional stability<\/strong> and weather resistance<\/strong>, making them ideal for outdoor applications such as cladding and decking.<\/p>\n

Baschild\u2019s<\/strong> range includes wooden cladding with various product lines, such as \u201cElegance\u201d<\/strong>, \u201cNew Age\u201d<\/strong>, \u201cVintage\u201d<\/strong>, \u201cMontagne\u201d<\/strong>, and \u201cColors\u201d<\/strong>, each tailored to specific aesthetic and functional needs. All claddings are certified \u201cCtb B+\u201d<\/strong> by the French Institute of Technology for Forest-Based and Furniture Sectors (FCBA<\/strong>), a certification that guarantees the performance of the treatments used, ensuring durability<\/strong> and long-term resistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In addition to cladding, Baschild<\/strong> offers thermally treated decking<\/strong>, panels<\/strong>, and wood fa\u00e7ades<\/strong>, processed at temperatures reaching up to 210 degrees Celsius<\/strong>. Ashwood<\/strong>, in particular, renowned for its mechanical strength, is treated to become a reliable and long-lasting solution for applications requiring high material stability.<\/p>\n

Thermal treatment not only improves the physical properties of wood but also enhances its aesthetic qualities<\/strong>. With exposure to high temperatures, the wood takes on a darker, more uniform color<\/strong>, emphasizing its natural beauty without the use of artificial dyes. Recent research, such as that by Candelier (2016)<\/strong>, confirms that thermal treatment also increases resistance to biological attacks<\/strong>, making wood a durable<\/strong> and safe<\/strong> choice.<\/p>\n
