After years of weak demand and high volatility, recovery is expected to be gradual, driven by improving economic conditions in Europe and China, supply constraints in North America, and new trade flows resulting from tariffs and forestry policy shifts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"1106\">The softwood sector, valued at around <strong data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"608\">USD 80 billion annually<\/strong>, has grown by only <strong data-start=\"628\" data-end=\"652\">1.8 percent per year<\/strong> since 2000, yet significant changes are taking place beneath the surface in both demand and trade. Consumption is increasingly shifting toward Asia, while North America and Europe remain the main production hubs. Per capita use stands between <strong data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"924\">0.2 and 0.4 cubic meters<\/strong> in mature markets and below <strong data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"972\">0.1 cubic meter<\/strong> in developing countries, leaving room for growth particularly in Southeast Asia and the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1464\">In the <strong data-start=\"1115\" data-end=\"1132\">United States<\/strong>, which accounts for <strong data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1184\">27 percent of global demand<\/strong> but only <strong data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1222\">20 percent of production<\/strong>, new <strong data-start=\"1228\" data-end=\"1273\">import tariffs introduced in October 2025<\/strong> are expected to push domestic lumber prices higher. Southern sawmills are expanding capacity, but growth is likely to slow during <strong data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1417\">2025\u20132027<\/strong> due to labor shortages and rising log costs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"2013\">In <strong data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1479\">Canada<\/strong>, higher U.S. duties (rising from <strong data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1541\">14 percent to 45 percent<\/strong>) and limited log supply in British Columbia are expected to lead to further mill closures and a decline in production, shifting investment toward the southern United States. <strong data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1726\">Europe<\/strong>, which provides <strong data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1782\">one-third of global softwood supply<\/strong>, is projected to grow moderately alongside the recovery in construction, though production in Northern and Central Europe is already near sustainable limits. Expansion will depend largely on Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2285\">In <strong data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2027\">China<\/strong>, demand \u2014 down <strong data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2068\">34 percent since 2017<\/strong> \u2014 is expected to recover only after <strong data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2113\">2027<\/strong>, as the property market stabilizes. Meanwhile, <strong data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2169\">MENA<\/strong> and middle-income Asian countries (such as India and Vietnam) will see increased demand driven mainly by imports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2668\">Overall, the global softwood lumber market is forecast to grow by <strong data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2390\">1.2 percent annually through 2030<\/strong>, reaching <strong data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2429\">335 million cubic meters<\/strong>, with <strong data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2465\">70 percent of that growth<\/strong> coming from the United States, Europe, and China.
