The renewal of the Board of Directors, elected by the members\u2019 Assembly held in Turin on 11 June, entrusts the journalist and national President of Uncem with continuing the work begun at the head of the association, which promotes sustainable forest management and the certification of wood, paper and cardboard supply chains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the new governance structure, Marco Bonavia, representing the National Council of the Order of Agronomists and Foresters, was confirmed as Vice-President, while Primo Barzoni, President of Palm and representative of the Committee of PEFC Chain of Custody-certified companies, was confirmed as Senior Vice-President. Catherine Tonini, Deputy General Manager of the Consortium of Trentino Municipalities, joins the Vice-Presidency for the first time. Antonio Brunori was confirmed as Secretary General, a position he has held since the organisation was founded.<\/p>\n<p>The Board brings together representatives from the forestry, agricultural, institutional, industrial and environmental sectors. Its members include Enrico Allasia, Mario Broll, Michele Nenz, Antonio Nicoletti, Stefano Predan and Paolo Vigan\u00f2, as well as Carlo De Zan, Massimo Zadra and Primo Barzoni, representing the Committee of certified companies, together with Bussone, Bonavia and Tonini.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>This new term begins at an important time for the association, which is celebrating 25 years of commitment to sustainable forest management and preparing to address new challenges for Italy\u2019s forestry system<\/em>,\u201d Bussone said. The President highlighted in particular the role of mountain areas, regarded not only as custodians of natural heritage, but also as places where economic activities linked to forest care, the wood supply chain and the production of renewable energy from biomass are developed.<\/p>\n<p>The confirmation of the governance structure comes in the year of PEFC Italy\u2019s 25th anniversary. The organisation was founded in Trento in April 2001. Celebrations are scheduled for the end of November in the Trentino capital and will provide an opportunity to review the association\u2019s work alongside forest owners and managers, companies, professionals, institutions, local communities and civil society organisations.<\/p>\n<h4>An award for forest research<\/h4>\n<p>Alongside the renewal of its governing bodies, PEFC Italy announced a new edition of its award for the best theses devoted to forest management and certification. The competition is open to bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s and doctoral theses discussed between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2026, with applications accepted until the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Three cash prizes will be awarded: \u20ac1,500 for the best doctoral thesis, \u20ac1,000 for the best master\u2019s thesis and \u20ac500 for the best bachelor\u2019s thesis. Research may cover a broad range of topics, from forest planning and management to certification, from forestry supply chains to ecosystem services, as well as climate adaptation, the circular economy and the traceability of forest-based products.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative continues the path launched with the first edition of the award, which in 2025 recognised research focusing, among other topics, on group forest certification, chestnut grove management, nursery production and carbon sequestration.
