The project focuses on integration with automated systems, cutting optimization and reduced processing times.

A new “fm 8” panel saw from IMA Schelling has been installed at Gleich Aluminium’s production facility in Kaltenkirchen, Germany. The company, which specializes in the production and processing of semi-finished aluminium products, employs around 150 people and produces approximately 20,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. The investment is part of a broader modernization project aimed at improving production processes, with particular attention to material handling and integration between different processing stages.

The new “fm 8”, which replaces a previous cutting system, is designed to process aluminium plates weighing up to two tonnes. The machine has been integrated into a production system in which orders received through the company’s online portal are automatically grouped according to material thickness. Software then generates cutting patterns to optimize plate utilization and minimize waste, which, according to company figures, remains below 10 percent.

After cutting, the individual parts are sorted and assigned to their respective orders using robotic systems. This production organization requires coordination between the machine, software and internal logistics, particularly considering the production volumes, which can reach 4,500 cuts per day.

Reducing cycle times was one of the main factors behind the choice of technology. As Sebastian Ricken, Managing Director of Gleich Aluminium, pointed out, even saving just a few seconds per operation can have a significant impact when multiplied by the total number of cuts performed each day.

From a technical perspective, the “fm 8” features a compact design and uses thinner saw blades to reduce material loss during cutting. The pressure beam system is divided into sections and, according to IMA Schelling, allows up to 99.5 percent of chips to be extracted from the front and rear areas of the plate. The machine also incorporates a patented labelling system that enables individual parts to be identified during loading and processing.

Installation was completed in approximately three weeks, following a preliminary assembly and testing phase at the manufacturer’s facility.

Although this application concerns aluminium processing, the project highlights several issues that are also relevant to industrial woodworking: automated order management, cutting pattern optimization, waste reduction and the integration of cutting systems into digitalized production workflows.

The German company has installed a new panel saw for processing aluminium plates.
