According to figures compiled by the FederlegnoArredo Research Centre based on Eurostat data, <strong>exports from the sector fell by 3.9 percent in the first seven months of 2026<\/strong> compared with the same period of the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>The figures were presented during FederlegnoArredo&#8217;s General Assembly, held at Triennale Milano, which also marked the handover from Claudio Feltrin to Elia Vismara, elected president of the Federation for the 2026\u20132030 term.<\/p>\n<p>The overall decline was mainly driven by weaker performance in the three leading export markets: <strong>France (-4.4 percent), the United States (-9.4 percent) and Germany (-7.4 percent)<\/strong>. Together, these markets accounted for a reduction of more than 288 million euros in exports compared with 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Europe remains the main destination for Italian wood and furniture products, accounting for 69.1 percent of the industry&#8217;s total exports, with EU countries alone representing 53 percent. Europe&#8217;s share has increased from 67.7 percent last year, mainly because sales to markets outside Europe fell more sharply (-7.9 percent) than those to European markets (-2 percent).<\/p>\n<p>The situation is particularly difficult in the Middle East, where exports declined by 10.8 percent, with significant decreases in Saudi Arabia (-23.3 percent) and the United Arab Emirates (-8.3 percent).<\/p>\n<p>However, there are also some positive signs. <strong>Spain (+5.4 percent) and Switzerland (+4.7 percent)<\/strong> have strengthened their positions among the industry&#8217;s main export destinations, while Turkey (+13.9 percent) and Greece (+9.8 percent) recorded stronger growth, although from smaller volumes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Internationalization remains a key driver of growth for our industry, but today we cannot simply encourage companies to explore new markets: we must create the conditions that allow them to access those markets and compete on equal terms&#8221;, said <strong>Elia Vismara, the new president of FederlegnoArredo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Vismara, supporting competitiveness also requires stronger European action against unfair competition, fairer access to markets and raw materials, and investment in training and skills development.<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly, which also featured contributions from Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini and ISPI Scientific Committee President Paolo Magri, addressed the role of industrial policy and the need to support companies in their internationalization strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The same issue was also raised by <strong>Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano<\/strong>, who emphasized the importance of moving beyond an approach to exports focused solely on commercial promotion, strengthening the connection between design, manufacturing and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The real challenge for Made in Italy is not simply to conquer new markets, but to continue playing a leading role in shaping the value, languages and models of living around the world&#8221;, Porro said, describing Salone del Mobile as a platform for supporting the international presence of Italian companies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Italian wood and furniture industry continues to face a challenging international environment, marked by geopolitical tensions, tariffs and trade uncertainty.
