German furniture industry still under pressure

Germany’s furniture sector remains in negative territory. In the first nine months of the year, industry revenues continued to decline, reflecting weak domestic demand and the broader slowdown in residential construction. Only September showed a slight uptick, but not enough to shift the overall trend.

According to industry sources, the environment remains challenging: cautious consumers, delayed investments and a difficult international climate – from trade tensions to tariff effects – are weighing on both the local market and exports. An increasing number of companies are also considering short-time work schemes.

There are faint signs of stabilisation in the kitchen segment, while upholstered furniture, living and bedroom categories, office furnishings and mattresses remain under heavier pressure. The number of active companies and employees continues to shrink as well.

The sector is now looking toward upcoming policy decisions in Brussels, particularly concerning the EU Deforestation Regulation. Industry representatives are calling for more time and simplified procedures, seen as essential to avoid additional costs and uncertainty at an already fragile moment.
