European pallet manufacturer PGS Group has entered the Italian market through the acquisition of Beretta Pallets, a long-established family-owned company based in Mapello, in the province of Bergamo.

The deal marks a new step in PGS Group’s international expansion. The group reported €400 million in revenue in 2025 and is strengthening its footprint across Europe’s main industrial regions. Italy, and Lombardy in particular, is seen as a strategic market for the company, which operates more than 50 sites in 13 countries.

Founded in 1920 by Luigi Beretta, Beretta Pallets is a historic player in Italy’s wood industry and became an early adopter of pallet production in the 1960s. The company has been operating from its current site in Mapello since 2011, covering a total area of 23,500 square metres, including 6,000 square metres of industrial buildings.

Following the acquisition, PGS will integrate a production unit combining the manufacture of new pallets with the refurbishment of used ones, offering both standard and customised solutions. The group has announced a €5 million investment plan to upgrade the Mapello site, including new production lines, drying kilns and a painting booth, all expected to be operational by March 2026. The expansion aims to triple output to 1.5 million pallets per year.

The site also offers additional land for future development. Valerio Ruspino, managing director of Beretta Pallets, will oversee PGS Group’s development in the Italian market, while the current workforce of 15 employees is expected to double in the medium term.

Italy was a logical and strategic step for PGS Group. Lombardy is one of Europe’s industrial hubs and many of our international customers are already present in the region,” said Luc Grauwet, CEO of PGS Group. “Beretta Pallets stands out for its expertise, customer loyalty and family DNA, values that are fully aligned with those of PGS.”
