Baumer Inspection: quality control in batch size 1 production

28/05/2026

In batch size 1 production, quality control must follow the workpiece through the different processing stages without slowing down the production flow. This is where Baumer Inspection inspection systems come into play, verifying components after the main steps of the process.

The first inspection takes place immediately after the panel saw. At this stage, the “Furniture 4.0″ system inspects both surfaces of the panel. After scanning, the panel is identified with a barcode label. Information on the detected defects is transmitted to the “Q-Life” database and linked to the panel ID.

Rejected pieces are separated from the main flow and sent to a rework station. Here, the operator scans the barcode and views the defect information on the screen: type, position and reference to the panel. Based on this data, the operator can decide whether to recover the component or start its reproduction.

Panels that pass the surface inspection continue on to the edge banding machines. This stage is also monitored through the “Edge 4.0″ system, which checks the different edge processing steps. At the end of the process, the pieces arrive at a second rework station. The operator can check whether the defect will be visible in the finished piece of furniture and decide whether to repair it or request a new component.

The integration of the inspection systems makes it possible to collect precise process data and manage rejects, recoveries and reproductions in a more structured way. As a result, the packaging department receives not only the components that were compliant at the first pass, but also those reproduced within timeframes compatible with shipment. The operational advantage lies above all in reducing waiting times and ensuring greater continuity in the production flow.

The systems also integrate “Q-Brain”, an artificial intelligence-based software developed by Baumer Inspection. Its task is to distinguish real defects from false positives, such as dirt or chips. This reduces the number of pieces requiring manual inspection and makes reject management more efficient.
