Cefla Finishing, edge coating: the edge becomes an integral part of the panel’s value
In the panel finishing process, the edge is no longer a secondary detail. It is the point where aesthetic quality, product protection and design continuity must come together. This is why edge coating technologies are taking on an increasingly strategic role: they seal, even out, protect and enhance the finished product, while at the same time reducing manual operations, machine downtime and production complexity.
Cefla Finishing has developed solutions dedicated to edge treatment with a clear objective: to integrate automation, flexibility and consistent quality within advanced industrial lines. One example – they explain – is “Smartedge Agile”, designed to handle panels of different thicknesses without interrupting the production flow. The machine automatically adapts to the incoming workpiece, eliminating repetitive manual adjustments and reducing set-up times. This makes it particularly effective for batch-one, just-in-time production and contexts in which format variability is increasingly common.
The advantage is not limited to productivity. Process automation makes it possible to achieve more stable quality, better management of the applied coating and a reduction in waste. Operations that are often carried out manually, such as edge sealing or finishing, can be integrated into a continuous line, with greater control and less dependence on operator intervention.
This evolution is accompanied by integrated single-pass digital printing, which takes the concept of edge coating to a higher level. The edge can be not only protected and finished, but also decorated in continuity with the panel surface. Colour, grain and patterns can be coordinated to achieve a perfect-match effect between the face and the profile, improving the perceived quality of the finished door or panel.
The integration of edge coating and digital printing also makes it possible to reduce the complexity associated with managing pre-decorated edges, stock materials and colour variants. The decoration is applied when needed, in line, with greater design freedom and faster response times.
“For manufacturers of panels, doors and furniture components, these technologies mean greater efficiency, more flexibility and a more consistent aesthetic result. The edge thus becomes a surface to be designed, protected and enhanced with the same attention given to the face”, the company explained.
