From the electrospindle to data: SMAU Innovation Award to Scm Group

Predicting a failure before it occurs, increasing production efficiency and turning maintenance into a proactive service. This is the vision behind Smart Spindle, an innovation developed by Scm Group and awarded at the 19th edition of SMAU, held in Milan on November 5 and 6.

Scm Group, one of the leading players in technologies for processing a wide range of materials and in industrial components, has rethought a key element of its CNC machining centers, the electrospindle, turning it into an intelligent node within a broader ecosystem of services.

From connected component to intelligent ecosystem

The electrospindle, developed with Hiteco, a company of the Group, is equipped with a smart control unit that collects and interprets data from sensors related to critical parameters such as temperature, vibrations and tool change cycles.

This information is processed in real time and shared with the Scm Group Control Room, where artificial intelligence models analyze trends and detect abnormal behavior. The system can anticipate failures, open automatic service tickets and initiate predictive actions even before the customer becomes aware of a problem.

All this is carried out in full compliance with data governance and transparency principles. The data remain the property of the customer, are anonymized and are used exclusively to optimize performance and services.

From machine to service: a new business model

Smart Spindle represents not only a technological evolution but also a strategic shift in Scm Group’s digital transformation and servitization journey. From a machine manufacturer to a promoter of an ecosystem of intelligent services, the company is moving toward a model that enhances data sharing, collaboration among industrial partners and the creation of continuous value throughout the entire product life cycle.

The result, as stated by SCM, is a reduction in machine downtime of up to 30 percent, improved machining quality and a significant decrease in operating costs.

The Smart Spindle project reflects the vision of an increasingly connected and sustainable industry, driven by data and focused on the customer, where collaboration between companies, technologies and end users generates shared and lasting value.

The SMAU Innovation Award was collected on November 5 by Antonio Latella, Product Owner Smart Sensors, and Luca Bergantini, Business Manager for CNC Machining and Drilling Centers at Scm Group.
