“Europe is experiencing a worrying period of strong reduction of raw wood materials caused by the proliferation of biomass power plants that is creating serious problems for the mainland of the panels” explains Paolo Fantoni, President of Assopannelli.
Problem even more serious considering that in the long term availability of raw materials in Europe could be even lower than the already low levels that occur today. “At the recent meeting of the European Panel Federation I therefore warmly welcomed the news of the proposed amendment by two Italian MEPs (Oreste Rossi and Giancarlo Scottà) which would lead to exclude biomass for energy production forest products, and other types of woody products” industrially or economically recycled and reused for other industrial uses. Even if it does not go the way I think that is the right one and we will continue to follow it until you reach the result“.
The recent decision to close Tilbury plants in the UK (which consumed 2.4 million tons of wood per year), however, is the demonstration that in Europe we are beginning to favor a policy of incentives that rewards the small zero kilometer plants instead of large power plants.
A good news that clashes with the ongoing crisis in the panels sector, an industry which must also deal with the decline in production caused by the stagnation of the building and furnishings, reflecting the European economy situation and consumption almost still of durable goods. European production of particle board has in fact reduced in 2012 by a further 5.5 percent less, amounting to 28.7 million cubic meters, a level far below the peak of 2007 that shared 37.8 million cubic meters. As for the panels Mdf (medium density fibreboard), after the two-year period 2010/2011 had recorded a moderate growth, we see that in 2012 the European production has seen a decline of 6 percent for a total of about 11 million meters cubes, excluding the Turkish and Russian production (in 2007 the share had been touched up to 13.3 million cubic meters). Also down the Osb (Oriented strand board) which, with a slowdown of 2.3 percent (3.5 million cubic meters), it remains slightly below the maximum production recorded six years ago of 3.7 million mc.
