The interlocking games of Rubner Haus

08/02/2024

Situated on a quiet plain in the Lys valley at the foot of Monte Rosa in Gressoney Saint-Jean, this charming house was built entirely of wood by Rubner Haus between July and early autumn 2021. Since December 2022, the house has been home to Micol and Paolo together with their five children aged 5 to 15 – Elia, Agata, Dario, Martino and Pietro – and the lively border collie Macchia.
Architect Martino Cossard from Gressan was commissioned to design a building echoing the Walser architecture, typical of the area, characterised by stone and wood double bodies, pitched roofs and structures called ‘Stadel’. The main challenge was to integrate the building into the natural environment without compromising its harmony. In this way, the resulting architecture was able to enhance the elongated shape of the building, with large windows offering breathtaking views of the mountain and its surroundings. “We wanted to intervene delicately, while maintaining a sense of tradition,” explains Cossard.
