Biesse, Designing the Material: an international competition that enhances the talent of young designers

14/04/2026

Enhancing the talent of young designers and connecting it with industry, materials, and technological innovation. This is the goal of “Designing the Material”, the international award promoted by Biesse in collaboration with POLI.design, aimed at students, recent graduates, and young Italian and international professionals.

The competition invites participants to develop furniture design projects for residential, commercial, and public spaces, capable of combining design quality, functionality, sustainability, and knowledge of production processes. At the core of the initiative is the desire to offer participants a concrete opportunity to engage with the real challenges of contemporary design.

The starting point is the material itself: wood, glass, metal, stone, plastic, and composite materials, processed through Biesse technologies and transformed into objects born from the intersection of material properties and technical possibilities. Every design choice also becomes a responsible act: attention to the product life cycle, waste reduction, and material recyclability is an integral part of the project.

For young creatives, the award represents an opportunity for visibility and growth, as well as the chance to engage with an advanced industrial ecosystem and the potential of materials and technologies applied to design.

With this award, we want to offer young designers the opportunity to turn an idea into a concrete project, engaging with real materials, technologies, and processes,” says Roberto Selci, President and CEO of Biesse. “It is an initiative that fully reflects our identity: innovating, simplifying, and putting technology at the service of creativity.”

The winning concept will be developed as an iconic Biesse object and displayed in the Biesse Material Hubs, unique multi-material experience spaces in the sector. The top three winners will also be awarded scholarships to support their educational and professional paths.
